Sweden: Public radio campaigning in Arabic before elections

Swedish public radio Sveriges Radio has announced a new series of debates and workshops in the Stockholm area that will be exclusively in Arabic to ‘reach out to newcomers’.

The project, which began this week, will see the broadcaster invite Arabic-speaking members of Swedish political parties to discuss political issues ahead of next month’s parliamentary elections.

Program Manager Samar Hadrous commented on the new initiative saying, ‘First of all, I hope there will be a real debate. I really want the public to be a little more aware of political debates and Swedish politics, and to have a better understanding of how Swedish politics works.’

She added, ‘This year, many new voters come from Arabic countries. It is important that they know how the debate is going.’
