At a European Council meeting at the end of June in Brussels, the Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez of the Spanish Workers’ Socialist Party) reached an agreement with Angela Merkel in order to accommodate some migrants now settled in Germany. In exchange, Berlin will finance part of their settlement on the other side of the Pyrenees and agreed to host family reunification.
Germany is likewise seeking to negotiate similar terms with France and Denmark, according to the German newspaper Die Welt. This agreement is part of Pedro Sánchez’s wish to welcome even more illegal immigrants in the coming months, following Spain’s acceptance of migrants delivered by the NGO vessel Aquarius and Open arms which had been rejected by Italy.
This agreement follows the recent secret meeting of Sánchez and Spanish Foreign Minister Josep Borrell with George Soros that was revealed in the media.
