Ramadan: An old German custom?

Taken from the German public radio station, Deutschlandfunk:

“This morning, a number of people got up for breakfast before dawn, at a rather unusual time. This is because, from today, these people will follow for a German custom for a month: during Ramadan, they will fast from dawn to sunset.

Yes, you heard correctly: Ramadan is an old German custom, that has been in existence here longer than Oktoberfest. Ramadan is more German and more rooted in this country of ours than many things that supposedly pass for German culture: Halloween, for example, or stag parties.

Fasting for the month of Ramadan has long been a part of the German religious landscape. It’s a German reality.”
