Paris: Three legionnaires tried to help a woman, but they ended up in police custody because they hurt the thief

The theft of a mobile phone, a chase, and a fight: Three soldiers were taken into custody for “hitting too hard” while helping a young woman whose phone had been stolen.

After chasing the thief down, he suffered a broken tooth in the ensuing fight. When the police arrived, the legionnaires and the thief, who had no identity papers and no address, were all placed in custody. “At the public prosecutor’s office, they could not agree on what to do,” says a source close to the case. “Some wanted to give them up to the military. Finally, a prosecutor’s assistant decided to prosecute the legionnaires.”

During their incarceration, the legionaries released a statement saying, “If we are to be in custody, next time we will not intervene to defend a victim.”
