No fun: A ship of the Spanish NGO ProActiva Open Arms has been seized in an Italian port after supporting illegal immigration

On Sunday, the Prosecutor of Catania ordered the seizure of the Spanish-registered ship “ProActiva Open Arms.” The vessel, which is owned by a Catalan organization that rescues migrants crossing the Mediterranean named ProActiva Open Arms, is being held in the Italian port of Pozzallo, where it arrived Saturday after rescuing 218 immigrants some 73 miles off the coast of Libya, far outside its jurisdiction, and after having been pursued by a Libyan patrol boat.

The ship was confiscated as a precaution pending charges of “illegal immigration and criminal associations.”

ProActiva Open Arms is the only Spanish NGO that rescues illegal migrants in the Mediterranean.
In a statement, the Libyan maritime authorities accused the Spanish humanitarian organization and others who are working to help illegally transport people from Libya of conducting operations that violate their territorial waters, although they operate well beyond the limit of 25 miles.
