These shocking statistics were reported by the Interior Minister, Amber Rudd, as part of his long-awaited initiative to combat these attacks.
In the last two months of 2017, police recorded 928 assaults involving machetes. It was an average of 15 per day – or one every 90 minutes.
London had 425 attacks, and there were 99 in Greater Manchester, 77 in the West Midlands, and 29 in Merseyside and West Yorkshire.
This represents a dramatic increase since three years ago, when authorities recorded 100 machete attacks during the same period.
