Germany: Potential terrorists could, under certain conditions, bring their families to Germany

In certain cases, the German government wants to allow potential terrorists to benefit from family reunification laws. This has triggered controversy within the ruling coalition between the Christian Democratic Union (CDU)/Christian Social Union (CSU) and the Social Democratic Party (SPD).

Minister of the Interior Horst Seehofer (CSU) put forward the draft of the new bill, which reads in part that cases in which migrants who apply for family reunification and who have been flagged as potential national security threats can be approved provided that the applicants can demonstrate to the authorities that neither they or their families will pose a threat.

A spokesman for the Ministry of Justice responded to a request for comment by citing Article 6 of the Constitution: “Marriage and the family are under the special protection of state organs.”
