After the machete attack on two police women officers by an individual in Charleroi, the authorities were moving towards the terrorist track. While the attacker has been identified, the Islamic State claimed responsibility through its Amaq news agency.

The terrorist nature had been directly mentioned. The attack with a machete that hit two police officers in Charleroi has been claimed by Daesh on sunday, through its Amaq news agency. As a reminder, the two members of the security forces were injured in the center of Charleroi, an individual shouting "Allahu akbar" ( "God is great" in Arabic).

The assailant, heavily wounded by police, died of his injuries in hospital.

It was identified as a 33 years old Algerian,  living in Belgium since 2012 and known to law enforcement for criminal offenses, but not for acts of terrorism.

An investigation for "attempted terrorist murder" was opened just before the claim.

The two police officers "out of danger"

One of the police officer, suffering from deep wounds to face height, was taken to the Charleroi hospital, located sixty kilometers south of Brussels while his colleague would be only slightly affected. Both are still "out of danger" said Charleroi police on its Twitter account.

This attack comes as the terrorist alert level in Belgium, affected by  the march 22th attacks in its capital Brussels, was at level 3 (corresponding to a possible but not imminent threat) on a scale comprising four.
